1. Opportunity:
As a mother in the 21st century I know I'm already pretty spoiled when it comes to tools and gadgets to helping make life as a mom easier. The one thing that I can't get over is the lack of effort diaper companies have put in to making you a customer. The big brands expect you to buy from them just because they're the leaders yet they give you an inconsistent product with a price tag big enough to break the bank. But to top it off, and this is the big problem, every size, shape, and brand is different. A baby who comes from a family of tall people isn't going to fit the Pamper's Baby Dry size 4 at the weight reccommended simply because they're torso is too long. A fat baby isn't going to fit a size 4 diaper either, even if they fall into the suggested weight category.
So what do we do as mothers? We search for the right diaper. We spend endless dollars on research which includes buying different brands and sized until hopefully we find the right fit. And if we do find the right one, well we just have to pray that baby doesn't have a wacky growth spurt making legs fatter, longer, or both!
2. Solution
Brittney, it seems to me you found a good opportunity here in the diapers industry. I was not aware it was so difficult for parents to choose a diaper for their kids and that many different sizes affect the purchase outcome. It sounds like your business idea revolves around a subscription payment method, right? If so I think you may have potential in becoming a successful idea but it sounds like you need to have a large amount financial capital to startup the business. I think your elevator pitch was successful in presenting the opportunity you recognized and solution you found to resolve this issue.

DeleteI really like this idea. With the correct advertising, the newborn set could become an easy go to gift or baby showers. Once they've been introduced to it, parents would probably be very likely to keep using the service as their child grows.
ReplyDeleteMy concern is less how you would market this to end users, but how you would market it to diaper manufacturers. Not only would you be reselling their products, but parents would be testing not just size, but also general quality of the brand. I don't have children, so I don't know which brands are actually better or if the brands have higher quality lines under them. There might be brands that wouldn't wand to be involved in this because it is a low cost way to compare their product to another. It's easier to out-advertise a rival than it is to out-engineer them, and the Fit Kit would bypass the advertising and put the engineering to the test first.
